DID YOU KNOW.... we also train Birth Assistants?

One of Compassion House´s original goals has been to train capable, professional birth assistants in evidence based practices for prenatal, labor, and postpartum care.

Our program begins with the  Doula program.  Those who wish to continue their studies and who we see have the profile to become Midwives then advance to the Monitriz program and begin to have hands on training as they assist the Midwives in prenatal appointments and births. Upon completing the Monitriz program, the students become official Student Midwives where they begin to take on full responsibility of appointments and births under the supervision of another Midwife or Doctor.

The Student Midwives graduate when they have completed the required numbers of appointments, births, and have dominated the skills required of a Midwife. This may take from three to four years.  We have set up the program in this way so that the students have plenty of hands on practice and experience in all the areas of Maternity Care.

Over the years we have had more than a dozen students who initiated our Doula program.  Of those, several realized that birth was not their calling, or found the logistics of attending births to be difficult to balance with their personal lives and therefore have left the program.  However, we have had three women go through the complete three year program and become Midwives.

We have also graduated three Generations of Doulas and currently have four of them who serve our birthing mothers with great compassion and care.

At present one of our Doulas is advancing in the Monitriz program and hopes to begin our Midwifery Training program in 2020.
